Transportation/Safety Curriculum

POLICY:

NOCAC Head Start uses current best practices when transporting children and educates parents and children about transportation and pedestrian safety.

PROCEDURES:

  1. NOCAC Head Start Education Staff will use the Transportation Safety Education Curriculum for Preschool Children to ensure children are taught the following:
    1. Safe riding practices (must be completed within the first 30 days of class)
    2. Safety procedures for boarding and leaving the bus (must be completed within the first 30 days of class)
    3. Safety procedures in crossing the street to and from the bus at stops
    4. Recognition of danger zones around the bus
    5. Emergency evacuation procedure
    6. Crossing the Street/Pedestrian Safety
    7. Bicycle Safety (may be covered at the Spring Family Fun Night)
    8. Summer Safety Rules (may be covered at the Spring Family Fun Night)
  2. The Transportation/Safety Specialist will visit as many classrooms as possible to deliver the Safety Sam training (this is in addition to the required lessons teachers will do in the classroom).
